After receiving funding through the Flood Control Act of 1938, the dam was completed in 1944, impounding Lake Texoma into the reservoir that it is today. Aside from flood control and river regulation, it also became an essential source of hydro-powered electricity and water supply in the area.

The Oklahoma Wildlife Conservation Commission and the Tulsa District Corps of Engineers allow hunting during open season.
